From CASP+ to SecurityX: What the Rename Meant for Holders

CompTIA SecurityX is the certification that was called CASP+ (CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner) until December 17, 2024, when the CAS-005 exam launched under the new name. Holders kept their certification, their expiry dates and their renewal requirements, and were offered an updated badge, certificate and transcript. Nearly two years on, the rename mostly affects paperwork, such as resumes, job postings and approved-credential lists that still use the old name.

What CompTIA announced

CompTIA tied the rename to a new exam version. CompTIA's FAQ on the SecurityX page says CASP+ "was rebranded to SecurityX with the release of the V5 exam on December 17, 2024", and that the name "highlights the advanced, or 'Xpert,' level certifications in the CompTIA portfolio". Its blog post the next day described the Xpert series as covering "specialized tech roles in cybersecurity, data, and cloud networking".

The series has two other members. DataX (exam DY0-001) launched on July 25, 2024 and has since been renamed again, to DataAI. CloudNetX (CNX-001) launched on February 18, 2025.

The exam changed along with the name. CompTIA's post says CAS-005 has 23 objectives against CAS-004's 28, across the same four domains with new weights, and the recommended experience stayed at ten years in IT with five in security. What the new exam asks is covered in SecurityX CAS-005 as it stands.

What happened to CASP+ holders

CompTIA's FAQ settles the status question: "the name change does not affect the certification status of CASP+ holders or the continuing education (CE) program." Concretely:

  • Your certification stayed active with the same expiry date.
  • Your renewal requirement is what CompTIA's renewal pages list for SecurityX: 75 continuing education units and a $150 fee per three-year cycle, or a single qualifying activity such as passing the newest SecurityX exam.
  • CompTIA said holders would be notified to download the SecurityX badge, and could download a new certificate and transcript from CertMetrics showing the rebrand.

Nothing required action. If you never downloaded the new badge, your certification is still valid; your public badge and printed certificate may simply show the old name.

CAS-004's last months

CAS-004 didn't retire on rename day. CompTIA's FAQ says the CASP+ (V4) exam retired in June 2025, about six months after CAS-005 launched, and that candidates already preparing for it could still sit it. Its advice to anyone starting out was to take V5. Since July 2025, CAS-005 has been the only exam, and passing either version leads to the same certification.

Writing it down, and reading it in postings

The old name hasn't disappeared from the places that matter for hiring. ISC2's list of credentials that waive one year of CISSP experience includes both "CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+)" and "CompTIA SecurityX", so either counts toward CISSP. Job postings and contract requirements written before December 2024 may name CASP+ only.

On a resume or LinkedIn profile, we'd write "CompTIA SecurityX (formerly CASP+)" with the year you earned it. It matches the current badge and still catches a keyword search or a recruiter working from an old requirement. If you passed CAS-004, there's no need to mention the exam code.

Our view

As renames go, this one was handled cleanly: no lapse in status, no new fee, no deadline for holders. The cost falls on candidates and employers reading old material, where CASP+ and SecurityX can look like two different credentials. They aren't, and a posting that asks for one should accept the other. The renamed certification's next real change will be a new exam version. CompTIA estimates CAS-005 will retire in 2027 and hasn't named a date. The SecurityX study guide has the current exam in detail.
