Security+ and CCSP: How Much Cloud Each Covers, and the Years Between Them

If you're weighing these two against each other, you probably don't have to choose. Security+ has no prerequisites and is written for someone about two years into administration work. CCSP normally requires five years in IT, with limited waivers and a full substitution for active CISSP holders. What's worth knowing is how much cloud Security+ actually teaches, and what fills the years between the two.

How much cloud Security+ asks for

In SY0-701, cloud sits mainly in objective 3.1, which asks you to compare and contrast architecture models: the cloud responsibility matrix, hybrid considerations, third-party vendors, infrastructure as code, serverless and microservices. Objective 2.3 adds cloud-specific vulnerabilities to a long list of vulnerability types. SY0-801, expected on or around November 17, 2026, reorganizes the same objective around serverless, multicloud and four deployment models (public, private, hybrid, community), and puts cloud security posture management (CSPM) among the ways to identify vulnerabilities in objective 4.3.

That's vocabulary at the level a junior administrator needs to follow a conversation about cloud risk, with no design work in it.

CCSP is the design exam. Its objectives say "design and implement" where Security+ says "compare and contrast". In the CCSP outline, Cloud Data Security, the largest domain at 20%, covers tokenization, data loss prevention, secrets and certificate management, information rights management and legal hold. Other domains ask you to design a secure data center, choose identity models such as federation and cloud access security brokers, and read a provider contract for right-to-audit and escrow terms. The outline in force since August 1, 2026 also covers AI threat detection and the security of training data and models.

Who should take which

Security+ fits a help desk analyst, system administrator or network technician moving into security, and anyone applying for a first analyst job that names it. CompTIA maps it to US Department of Defense 8140 work roles such as cyber defense analyst and system administrator, which settles the question if you're hired onto a contract that requires one of those roles. A cloud administrator early in their career gets the shared-responsibility vocabulary from it and not much more.

CCSP fits the engineer, architect or consultant several years in who has to defend cloud designs to auditors and lawyers as well as other engineers. ISC2 lists cloud architects, engineers, consultants and auditors of cloud services among its intended candidates. Our cloud security engineer career path covers the roles in between.

Getting from one to the other

Security+ doesn't shorten the CCSP experience requirement. ISC2 accepts only two waivers for CCSP, a relevant degree or the Cloud Security Alliance's CCSK, and only one year can be waived. An active CISSP replaces the whole requirement, and Security+ is on the list that waives a year of CISSP, but that route runs through a second five-year credential.

There are two partial shortcuts. You can sit CCSP before you qualify and become an Associate of ISC2, with six years to earn the experience; you pay $50 a year and report 15 CPE credits in the meantime. And the CCSK can count as one of your five years.

The middle years are better spent getting hands-on with one platform. AWS Security Specialty, Azure Security Engineer and Google Cloud Security Engineer each test the controls of a single provider, and CCSP's vendor-neutral questions are easier when you've configured those controls at least once.

Mind the version dates if you start this autumn. Security+ candidates choose between SY0-701 and SY0-801 (our SY0-701 vs SY0-801 note covers that decision), and CCSP books printed before August 2026 predate the current outline.

Our view

Take Security+ when a posting or a contract asks for it, and don't expect it to qualify you for cloud security work. Most of what you'll need for a cloud role comes after it: a provider exam and real work on that platform, then CCSP once you're the person explaining cloud risk to people who don't configure it. We'd advise against sitting CCSP early for the associate designation. Years of fees before full certification buy less than a provider certification you can use on Monday.
